Akagera's vegetation is typical of East African savannah, with acacia trees, candelabra euphorbia, and wide grasslands dominating the landscape. The park's eastern boundary is defined by the Akagera River, while its western edge holds a series of lakes, swamps, and papyrus marshes. This mix of habitats creates exceptional biodiversity, with the wetlands providing refuge for hippos and crocodiles, while the savannah supports herds of grazing animals.

The park's wildlife has made a remarkable recovery in recent years. Elephants, buffalo, and giraffe are common, while zebras and impala graze on the open plains. The reintroduction of lions in 2015 and black rhinos in 2017 has restored Akagera to Big Five status. Leopards are also present, though they remain elusive. The park holds one of the largest populations of the giant eland, Africa's largest antelope. The wetlands are home to hippos and Nile crocodiles, with the lake systems supporting a dense population of waterbirds.

Akagera holds over 480 bird species, including the iconic shoebill, the papyrus gonolek, and the elusive African finfoot. The park's varied habitats support a wide range of species, from savannah-dwelling birds to wetland specialists. The combination of reintroduced predators, abundant herbivores, and exceptional birdlife makes Akagera a compelling destination for wildlife enthusiasts.

The boat safari on Lake Ihema is Akagera's defining experience. This large lake, fringed with papyrus and acacia, holds one of the highest concentrations of hippos in East Africa. The boat moves slowly along the shoreline, offering close views of hippos surfacing and crocodiles basking on the banks. Elephants regularly come to the water's edge to drink and bathe.

The birdlife along the lake is extraordinary, with African fish eagles, herons, and kingfishers in abundance. The shoebill is occasionally seen in the papyrus swamps, a sighting that draws birders from across the world. The boat experience offers a tranquil perspective on the park, with the sounds of the water and the calls of birds creating a peaceful atmosphere. The Lake Ihema boat safari is an essential part of any visit to Akagera, offering a different view of the park's rich biodiversity.
