Kidepo Valley

Kidepo Valley is Uganda's most remote and wild protected area, located in the country's far northeast, bordering South Sudan and Kenya. This 1,442-square-kilometre park is defined by its dramatic landscape of open savannah, rugged mountains, and seasonal riverbeds.

Kidepo's vegetation is shaped by its semi-arid climate. The park is dominated by open savannah grasslands, interspersed with acacia trees and the distinctive borassus palms that dot the plains. The Narus Valley, the park's most productive wildlife area, holds permanent water sources that support dense vegetation and abundant wildlife. The Kidepo Valley itself is drier, with seasonal riverbeds and rocky outcrops that create a stark, dramatic landscape.

The park's wildlife is exceptional. Large herds of buffalo move across the plains, alongside elephants and giraffes. The park holds Uganda's only population of cheetahs and the largest population of ostriches. Lions are common, often seen in prides of up to 15 individuals. Leopards and spotted hyenas are also present. The park supports over 70 mammal species, including eland, kudu, and zebra, though these are less common than in southern parks.

Kidepo holds over 475 bird species, including the rare ostrich and the kori bustard, Africa's heaviest flying bird. The park's varied habitats support a wide range of species, from savannah-dwelling birds to raptors. Birders are drawn to Kidepo for its unique species and the chance to see birds rarely recorded elsewhere in Uganda. The park's isolation has preserved its wildlife, making it one of Africa's most rewarding wilderness destinations.

Kidepo's greatest attraction is its sense of remoteness. The journey to the park is long, a full day's drive from Kampala, and the isolation is immediate. The landscape is vast, the skies are wide, and the wildlife moves freely across the plains. The Narus Valley, with its permanent water sources, holds dense concentrations of wildlife. Game drives offer sightings of elephants, buffalo, lions, and giraffes, often without other vehicles in sight.

The park's atmosphere is a significant part of its appeal. The Kidepo Valley, with its dry riverbed and dramatic rocky outcrops, offers a landscape that feels truly wild. The sunsets are spectacular, the night skies are filled with stars, and the silence is complete. The park's remoteness ensures that game drives feel like genuine exploration, with few other visitors to share the experience.
