Lake Mburo

Uganda's smallest savannah park, a compact reserve of 370 square kilometres in the country's southwest. Its landscape of acacia woodland, rolling hills, and seasonal wetlands offers a gentle contrast to the more dramatic parks. The park's location makes it an ideal stop between Kampala and the western parks.

Lake Mburo's vegetation is characteristic of acacia woodland, with candelabra euphorbia and thorn trees scattered across the plains. The park is Uganda's only protected area with extensive acacia habitat, creating a landscape more reminiscent of Kenya's savannah. The lake itself, fringed with papyrus and sedges, forms the centrepiece of the park. Seasonal swamps and grasslands add further habitat diversity.

The park's wildlife includes species not found elsewhere in Uganda. Zebras are common here, alongside elands, topis, and impalas. The park holds Uganda's only population of elands. Buffalo, warthogs, and bushbucks are frequently seen. Leopards and hyenas are present but rarely encountered. The lake supports hippos and crocodiles, while the wetlands attract a variety of waterbirds. Lake Mburo holds over 332 bird species, including the African finfoot, the papyrus gonolek, and the rare shoebill.

What makes Lake Mburo special is its accessibility. The park's network of tracks allows for good wildlife viewing, and the open vegetation makes animals easier to spot. The lake itself offers a peaceful setting, with the sounds of birds and the gentle lapping of water creating a tranquil atmosphere. The park's modest size makes it possible to explore thoroughly in a short time, making it an ideal complement to a longer Ugandan itinerary.

Lake Mburo is one of the few parks in Uganda where walking safaris are permitted. Guided walks offer a different perspective on the park, allowing you to move through the landscape at a slower pace. You walk through acacia woodland, grasslands, and along the lakeshore, accompanied by an armed ranger who shares knowledge of the park's flora and fauna.

The walks offer intimate encounters with wildlife. You see zebras grazing at close range, watch giraffes feeding on acacia leaves, and observe the behaviour of birds and insects that might otherwise go unnoticed. The pace allows for careful observation, and the experience is both educational and calming. The walks are safe and led by experienced guides who understand the animals' behaviour.
