Nyungwe's vegetation is exceptionally diverse, spanning altitudes from 1,600 to 2,950 metres. The forest transitions from lowland rainforest to montane woodland, with bamboo patches at higher elevations. Over 200 tree species have been recorded, including giant mahoganies and the distinctive hagenia, whose red flowers dot the canopy. Epiphytes, orchids, and mosses drape the branches, creating a verdant, almost prehistoric atmosphere.

The park's primate population is extraordinary. Thirteen species have been recorded, including the large troops of Ruwenzori colobus monkeys, which can number up to 300 individuals. The chimpanzees of Nyungwe are another major attraction, with a habituated group available for tracking. L'Hoest's monkeys, silver monkeys, and the rare owl-faced monkey also inhabit the forest, making Nyungwe one of the richest primate sites in Africa.

Nyungwe holds over 300 bird species, including 29 Albertine Rift endemics such as the Ruwenzori turaco and the Ruwenzori batis. Forest elephants, duikers, and bush pigs move through the undergrowth, while the forest floor supports a rich diversity of butterflies and amphibians. The park also protects valuable watersheds, feeding rivers that flow into the Congo and Nile basins.

Nyungwe's canopy walkway is one of Africa's most exhilarating forest experiences. A suspension bridge hangs 50 metres above the forest floor, stretching 90 metres through the treetops. The walk offers a unique perspective on the forest, as you move through the canopy at the level of the monkeys and birds.

The experience begins with a walk along forest trails. The ascent to the canopy is steady, and the sounds of the forest grow more distinct as you climb. When you step onto the bridge, the forest opens up below you. The view is breathtaking, with the canopy stretching in all directions, broken only by the occasional clearing.
