Semuliki

Semuliki is Uganda's most unusual protected area, a 220-square-kilometre extension of the Congo Basin rainforest. Located in the country's far west, the park holds species found nowhere else in East Africa. Its lowland forest, hot springs, and riverine habitats create a landscape that feels distinctly different from Uganda's other parks, offering a taste of Central African wilderness.

Semuliki's vegetation is typical of Congo Basin rainforest, with dense, lowland forest dominated by ironwood and mahogany. The park's forest is much lower in altitude than other Ugandan rainforests, creating conditions for species that are normally found only further west. The Semuliki River forms the park's boundary, while the hot springs at Sempaya bubble with geothermal activity.

The park's wildlife is remarkable. Forest elephants, smaller than their savannah relatives, move through the undergrowth. The park holds one of Uganda's largest populations of chimpanzees, alongside red colobus, black-and-white colobus, and blue monkeys. Pygmy hippos inhabit the river systems, rarely seen but a significant presence. Buffalo and waterbuck graze in the grasslands. The park's birdlife is exceptional, with 435 species recorded, including 23 Albertine Rift endemics and 35 Guinea-Congo forest biome species. The rare yellow-throated cuckoo and the Congo serpent eagle are among the sought-after sightings.

Semuliki is also known for its butterfly diversity, with over 400 species recorded. The park's forest holds plants and animals that are more commonly associated with Central Africa, making it a unique destination within Uganda.

Semuliki's Sempaya Hot Springs are the park's most dramatic attraction. The male spring, known as Mumbuga, is a geyser that bubbles and erupts, sending steam high into the air. The female spring, Nyasimbi, is a broader pool of boiling water. The springs are surrounded by lush vegetation, and the experience of standing beside them, hearing the rumble of geothermal activity, is unforgettable.

For birders, Semuliki is unmissable. The park's location within the Congo Basin makes it the only place in East Africa to see species such as the white-crested hornbill, the red-billed dwarf hornbill, and the Congo serpent eagle. Guided walks through the forest offer excellent birding opportunities, with the chance to see species that cannot be found anywhere else in Uganda. The combination of hot springs, unique birdlife, and the sense of stepping into a different Africa makes Semuliki a compelling addition to any Ugandan itinerary.
