Volcanoes

Volcanoes protects the Rwandan section of the Virunga Mountains, a chain of eight ancient volcanoes straddling the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This 160-square-kilometre park is Rwanda's most celebrated conservation area, holding roughly a third of the world's remaining mountain gorillas. Its steep, misty slopes are some of Africa's most dramatic landscapes.

The park's vegetation changes dramatically with altitude. The lower slopes are covered in dense montane forest, with towering hardwoods and thick undergrowth. Above this lies the bamboo zone, a critical habitat for golden monkeys. Higher still, the vegetation transitions to giant heath and moorland, with lobelias and groundsels dotting the landscape. The park's highest point, Mount Karisimbi at 4,507 metres, holds afro-alpine vegetation rarely seen elsewhere.

The gorillas are Volcanoes' most famous residents. Ten habituated families are available for tracking, with over 200 individuals living within the park. The golden monkey is another major attraction, with several troops habituated for viewing. The park also supports forest elephants, buffalo, and spotted hyenas, though these are rarely seen. Leopards and giant forest hogs inhabit the forest. Over 180 bird species have been recorded, including 14 Albertine Rift endemics such as the Ruwenzori turaco and the handsome francolin.

The park's ecosystem is part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, a transboundary reserve that protects one of Africa's most important habitats. The steep terrain and volcanic soils create unique conditions, with the forest supporting species found nowhere else. The park's proximity to Kigali makes it one of the most accessible gorilla destinations in Africa.

Gorilla tracking in Volcanoes is one of Africa's most sought-after experiences. The trek begins at the park headquarters, where you are assigned to a gorilla family. The trail follows the gorillas' previous day's route, moving through bamboo and montane forest. The terrain is steep, and the altitude is noticeable, but the guides set a manageable pace.

When you locate the gorilla family, you have one hour to observe them in their natural habitat. The experience is profound. You watch the silverback, a massive figure of calm authority, as he leads his family through the forest. Mothers groom their young. Juveniles tumble and play. The gorillas are relaxed, accustomed to the presence of observers. The experience is intimate, peaceful, and deeply moving.

The park's proximity to Kigali makes gorilla tracking accessible, and the permits are limited to ensure minimal disturbance. The experience is available year-round, though the dry seasons offer the best trekking conditions. Gorilla tracking in Volcanoes is not merely a wildlife sighting. It is a connection to one of our closest living relatives, set in one of Africa's most spectacular landscapes.
